Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married?” topped all weekend movies raking in $21.5 million. A lot of skeptics doubted that a movie without Madea would be as successful. Well Tyler Perry proved them all wrong. Some pretty cool names graced the screen for this movie including singing sensation Jill Scott, Janet Jackson, and Malik Yoba.
Here is what Tyler Perry had to say about the amount of screens “Why Did I Get Married?” was shown on compared to other movies…
“In the midst of all of this I was fighting trying to get more screens because every other movie that opens with a track record like mine have not had to deal with fighting for screens. Most of the movies of my counterparts open on at least 3,000 screens. MARRIED was given 2,000.”
This was the top 10 grossing movies this past weekend.
1. “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?”, $21.5 million.
2. “The Game Plan,” $11.5 million.
3. “Michael Clayton,” $11.01 million.
4. “We Own the Night,” $11 million.
5. “The Heartbreak Kid,” $7.4 million.
6. “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” $6.2 million.
7. “The Kingdom,” $4.6 million.
8. “Across the Universe,” $4 million.
9. “Resident Evil: Extinction,” $2.65 million.
10.”The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising.” $2.15million

Just wanted to say that the movie was great. My husband and I and our married friends all went to see the movie and we loved it. I was sad to hear from another friend in St. Louis that many of the theater’s there were given the movie goers the wrong ticket stubs when they went to see the movie. All I can say is keep up the good work Tyler. My husband and I will continue to pray for your continued success.

[...] On the Media Outrage blog, the editor posts an interesting article that talks about the discrepancy between the number of screens that Why Did I Get Married opened on versus the number of screens similar films do. Apparently, Tyler Perry got shorted by a couple thousand screens, but in the end, he still won. I actually think there might be a method to the madness because I don’t know if being in more theaters would help or hurt Tyler’s work. As it stands, what makes the whole experience so memorable is the jam packed theatre with everyone rooting for the film. Would his movies lose some of their charm and intimacy and I dare say ‘exclusivity’ if they were given double or triple the houses? Read the full Media Outrage post here. [...]
