Anchor apologizes for Tiger Woods 'lynch him' comment

Posted by Media Outrage on January 9th, 2008

Kelly Tilghman

Via FoxSports:

During their usual post-round banter as they wrapped up Day 2 at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, Tilghman and cohort Nick Faldo discussed young players who could possibly challenge Tiger. Faldo, ever the joker, said perhaps the youngsters should “gang up (on Tiger) for a while.” The pair laughed a bit before Tilghman responded by saying, “Lynch him in a back alley.” The pair chuckled awkwardly before moving on.

The Golf Channel said it received a limited number of complaints regarding the comment.

Tilghman, realizing her faux pas, explained her comments during the final-round broadcast despite the possibility she could have swept the incident under the mat.

“I’ve reached out to Tiger to make an apology, and I’ve done the same with our viewers,” Tilghman said.

“I can assure you that there was never any intention to offend anyone. I’m sorry for any misunderstanding.”

Attempts to reach Woods or his agent, Mark Steinberg of IMG, were unsuccessful. A Golf Channel spokesman said no disciplinary action is planned, “other than the mistake she made is regrettable and an extreme learning experience for her.”

Mediaoutrage- Really??? So their weren’t any other words that came to her mind before getting to ‘Lynch’ which is one of the most racially sensitive and inflammatory words in this language to African Americans. It just makes us think like why take it there with such word that you know holds such negative history.

I’M SOOO OVER WHITE PEOPLE SOMETIMES, BUT NO OFFENSE…of course if i said that, i am offending and would be meaning to be offensive, so she clearly made that up to say she didn’t mean anything offensive by that comment, i wish a white person would joke with me about lynching, they’d get knocked out!

Tiger’s cool with it, believes there was no racial intent. She’s cool with it. Apologies (though unnecessary) offered and accepted. Let it go.

Kelly I am sure had no intent of her comment being racial. Tiger is in fact 75% asian. I believe Kelly is one fine young lady, I truly enjoy seeing her and listening to her on The Golf Channel. Without her I believe that would be the biggest mistake The Golf Channel could ever make. Tiger is the finest player I have seen in my life time, I heard the comment and I took it I believe in the fashion in which it was meant, that would be the only way they could knock Tiger out of the number one spot in golf. Do you people remember without naming names, a world class ice skater hammered in the knee to put her out of the sport? Should someone yell racial? There was nothing funny about that. I remember Comments about the Colt’s and the only way to keep them out of the Super Bowl was to down their airplane. A joke, true no not at all. More then half of the players are Black should we have called that comment racial? Kelly I think the world of you and love to hear you on the air. I pray that never changes. Grow up America, turning everything into dirt is the only thing that is news worth? I am sick of that.

The comment was totally offensive, but what is even more offensive is the way people are defending her. Saying she didn’t mean it to be racial comment. Please, the only way she didn’t know it was offensive or did not intend for it to be racial is if that was her first day on earth and just didn’t know any better. People here lately have made slick racial remarks and then pretend thats not what they meant. then you people defend it. So that tells me you are just like them. Also the remark about tiger being 75% asian. Please tell me what scientific machine or tool do you use to figure out the percentage of what race is in a particular person. I deal in research everyday and I have never heard of such a instrument of measurement. Last of course, tiger’s remark makes puts him on a level of dumbness not even measureable. Maybe you can use your race balance to measure that.

I totally agree with you Markus!! it’s about time, geez! the problem is (and this is totally my opinion even though i think it’s true) our caucasian friends don’t think race is an issue in this world because they are dealt the upper hand on every issue in life, they have no idea what it feels like to be racial profiled by police officers, have their parents talk about how they had to go in back doors unless they were refugees from eastern european third world countries who migrated here, i figured this world would get better, but to me it’s not, it’s getting worse, even though we’re not being attacked physically anymore (maybe still in KY and GA) mental abuse is far worse, and until you walked in the shoes, don’t tell us that some white lady on the golf channel isn’t wrong because she said to lynch Tiger Woods, a half black male, in the alley…i’m done…yall are crazy!!

Its is clear to see that over the last 10 years we have become increasingly sensitive and over reactive as a society. What people are forgetting is that Kelly made a comment directed at Tiger, if anyone was to be angry with the statement or consider it offensive it would be Tiger and no one else. He did not find offense in her statements so it is really not the concern of anyone else. It is sad that we not openly love conflict and sensationalism. Reverend Sharpton if that is what he really is should take time to really look into the bible he show greatly cherishes and gain a better understanding of forgiveness as he seems very short on that. It seems he jumps at any chance to get media coverage. The simple issue is that Tiger is not offended and said clearly he knew what Kelly said was not done out of racial spite. People need to be less worried about others lives and more concerned with their own.

First of all, it is quite easy to determine a persons race to a certain percentage. My father is 100% Greek. My mother has no Greek bloodline at all. I am 50% Greek. This is simple high school biology.
Also, regarding the person who stated “I AM SO OVER WHITE PEOPLE, NO OFFENSE” and then said we would be outraged… are you kidding me? That is said all the time. “White man cant jump” was posted on every movie theatre marquee back in the 90′s when Spike Lee came out with that movie. Spike also said Larry Bird was overrated because he is white..and thats not inflamatory? FUBU is exclusionary clothing. I have seen “Stop Black on Black Violence” t shirts, but why not “Stop Violence”? So Black on White violence is acceptable? I have also seen shirts advocating “The Blacker the college, the better the education”. What do you think would be the reaction if someone wore a shirt that said “The Whiter the college the better the education?” People would be outraged. So dont preach that white people think nobody should be offended. Maybe we have thicker skin because it is ok for comedians to make fun of white people all the time- Chris Rock for example, so we arent quite as sensitive. And the first thing I think of when I hear the word “lynching” is old western movies, when the cattle thieves were caught. Hanging is something that only happened to black people.

  8. sweetthang Says:

Oh Ted! wow, spoken as a true caucasian. First and foremost before I even start, black people were lynched in the south not just hung, so I think you should check out your old high school history book and you’ll find your facts there, and of course you would think of a white western film when you hear the word “lynch,” which is my point exactly that my caucasian friends live in a bubble sometimes. When i made the comment, “i’m so over white people, no offense”, was clearly being sarcastic regarding the situation. It’s really pointless to argue race at this point because it’s so over your head. You’d have to be black to even get the things we talk about or struggle with. The bottom line is, everything you said is irrevelant. So what FUBU is exclusionary clothing, that’s one clothing line vs. your million clothing lines that discriminate against blacks and not just blacks, all minorities. Timberland said their boots are for the hard working white man, so don’t get me started on all the things in America that are negative against blacks and all minorities. Chris Rock loves to talk trash about white people and black people, and there are comedians such as Lisa Lampanelli that talks about all races, including her own. WHAT’S YOUR POINT? We have gotten off subject, the point is, what she said was offensive, whether it wasn’t offensive to Tiger is not the point, it offended others and she should have been suspended because she should know better.
