Actress Terri Vaughn launches documentary on struggles of black women in hollywood

Posted by Media Outrage on 7th March 2008

Terri Vaughn

Actress Terri Vaughn who is best remembered for her role as Lovita Jenkins on The Steve Harvey Show has shot a documentary entitled Angels Can’t Help But Laugh, that delves deep into the struggles of Black actresses in Hollywood. She sat down with Essence and spoke candidly about her reason for making the documentary and her perception of some of the struggles that black actresses face.

Essence.com: Congrats on your documentary, Angels Can’t Help But Laugh, which has been circulating the film festivals. What is the significance of the title?

Terri Vaughn: When I began filming the documentary I was in the midst of making a bold move—out of my [first] marriage. I was reading A Woman’s Worth by Marianne Williamson, and there was a line I read that said, “angels can’t help but laugh.” Immediately, I knew that was the title for this project. For me, the title simply means that throughout all the trials and tribulations, we [as actresses] are still able to laugh and love what we do and stay motivated in the midst of it all.

Essence.com: In your docufilm, Regina King, Malinda Wiliiams, Tasha Smith and Sheryl Lee Ralph speak candidly about the struggle of Black actresses in Hollywood. Are you concerned that folks will perceive you all as ABWs (Angry Black Women)?

T.V.: I don’t believe we came off as angry, but informative. Sometimes having a voice means that people are going to judge you. For once, I wasn’t concerned about being judged by people because my focus was to create a forum to give voice to Black women and bring power and enlightenment. The film is proactive in creating dialogue and acknowledging the plight of Black actresses; its purpose is not to complain. If we just sit around and say nothing like we often do and no light is ever shed, then we’re as much to blame for our position or lack thereof in Hollywood.

Essence.com: There were many older and younger actresses such as Gabrielle Union, Regina Hall, Nia Long and Sanaa Lathan who were not a part of that forum. Why?  Read the rest of this entry »

Papoose and Remy ma engaged

PapooseRemy Ma

Allhiphop is reporting that Remy Ma and Papoose are engaged to be married this summer if all goes well and Remy doesn’t get sent away for allegedly shooting her friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the abdomen after accusing her of stealing $2,000 from her purse. This seems to be a match made in controversial heaven as Papoose recently got into a physical altercation with Fat Joe who was Remy’s label head. Remy also accused Fat Joe of hindering her career. So maybe this fight had more to it than just Pap supposedly snickering at 50′s jokes about Fat Joe on G-Unit radio.

Toni Braxton spotted in beverly hills

Posted by Media Outrage on 7th March 2008

Toni Braxton

Toni Braxton was spotted in Beverly Hills a few days ago. She is due to release an album sometime in June, we just hope the music moves us like some of her past classic songs like “How Could An Angel Break My Heart”. Toni looks pretty decent but she is another one that had no reason to go under the knife.

Casino denies man $5million jackpot

Posted by Media Outrage on 7th March 2008

Slot Machine

This is wild. A man gambling in a Virgin Island Casino played $20 and hit the jackpot on the slot machine for $5.15million and then a worker at the Casino purposely un-plugged the machine saying that it was a malfunction.

Via switched:

If you’ve ever been in a serious casino, then you’ve seen the gigantic slot machines off in the corners (the ones that only accept large-denomination bills). These machines usually have something like spinning cars on top or giant screens showing millions and millions of dollars counting up all the time. Such a machine was precisely the type that Illinois attorney Alvin Paulson put a $20-bill into while on vacation in the Virgin Islands. To his surprise, it lit up and started spitting out quarters — that is, until a casino worker unplugged it and said it was a malfunction.

The machine was showing a $5.15-million jackpot when Paulson fed his $20 bill in there, an awfully big payout and an awful lot more than the $100 and a free meal hat the casino offered him for the supposed malfunction. The casino has yet to offer any proof of said malfunction and Paulson is, naturally, suing the place for either said proof or the $5-million prize.  “He would probably even accept a settlement funding deal.”

Mediaoutrage- That’s definitely two lawsuits; 1. For them refusing to pay. and 2. The one we would have incurred after we politely A-Town stomped his head into the carpet.
