Taye Diggs weighs in on the N word
Posted by Media Outrage on July 21, 2008
Taye Diggs has expressed his view on the use of the N word by black people. Here’s what he had to say about the controversial topic……..He’s speaking in reference to the very heated debate on the VIew by Elisabeth Hasselback and Whoopi Goldberg.
Via MSNBC:
“(Hasselbeck) doesn’t understand, and, no offense — I don’t think any white person has the right to tell a black person or to even weigh in on subject matter such as that,” Diggs told “Access Hollywood” on Thursday. “They don’t know what it’s like to be called that word; they don’t know what it’s like to be black.”
“They can have an opinion, but… don’t take a word that you created and called me for many, many years, and then me being in my position, have the strength to change what it means in my own culture,” he explained. “Don’t try to take it back now. Now it’s ours. Leave it alone.”
Here’s what actor Donald Faison had to say about it…..
“I don’t think Elisabeth Hasselbeck would ever have to worry being called the ‘N-word’ … For her to be offended by it, it’s kind of weird,” he said. “African-Americans have used it now as a term of endearment, or how to describe a situation. So for her to say something like that, she has no idea what power it has over anyone.”
Mediaoutrage- Very interesting. What do you think about it?

So well put…“They can have an opinion, but… don’t take a word that you created and called me for many, many years, and then me being in my position, have the strength to change what it means in my own culture,” he explained. “Don’t try to take it back now. Now it’s ours. Leave it alone.”

I agree with both gentlemen on their comments. I don’t know how it feels to be called those words, but I’ve been called “Cracker, honky, white trash, wigger….” They’re just as offensive, and I’ve heard them from both black people and white people. Does the same rule apply when those words are used, even if it’s said by a person that isn’t of the same race as me?
Should a black person say that a white people shouldn’t call another white man a cracker, or a honky, or any other derogatory term, even if it someday becomes a “term of endearment” as opposed to a term of hate? I don’t think we should apply a double standard to this, but I just want an honest answer.
I’m not trying to justify the use of the “n-word” by white people, simply because I loathe the word and the hatred that goes along with it, but I just want to see what people would say, should the shoe be on the other foot.
