Is Jay-Z The Greatest Rapper of All Time???
Posted by Media Outrage on August 3rd, 2009
Jay-Z performed at Liberty State Park during the 2009 All Points West Music & Arts Festival, in Jersey City. Hov held it down as usual. Is Jay-Z the GREATEST Rapper to ever do this? There’s Tupac, Biggie, Nas and a few others that can be mentioned in this conversation, but has Hov outshined them all? Is he the greatest? Have at it….

August 3rd, 2009 at 2:37 pm
He’s in the conversation but top 3 yes. I personally think he’s right there with Biggie and that he is the best rapper alive. His Lyrical ability and wordplay is no comparison. Lil Wayne and this light skinned fag called “Drake” couldnt tie the strings in his jock strap nor couldnt outshine him in sales or awards.
So the best alive “Yes”….the greatest of all time….maybe.

I’ve never understood the comparison between Biggie & Tupac. Tupac is a lyricist and poet, biggie is just a marketing gimmick with a good flow.
GREATEST Rapper Ever… that’s a HARD one, because u would have to go way back before even Joe Camel got his first hump, KRS-One, Snoop-Dogg, Nate Dog, Nasir and soooo many others.
Jay-Z, just like his wife doesn’t wait until something is ‘bestowed’ upon them, they go around asking for it “Oooh, i want to be an ICON, I want to be the Greatest Rapper Alive/Ever”, just SHUT UP already!!
As long as NASIR is walking this earth Jay-Z cannot get that title. *Common, Mos-Def → Remember them, those artist have food-for-thought on EVERY track, can u say the same for Jay-Z?

Woa…MO yes Jay is the GREATEST to ever pic up a mic. No questions about it. BIGGIE, unfortunately only lived to put out 2 albums and was a GREAT lyricist but Jay is 12 albums in so really no comparison. Jay’s done too much for the game not to be considered the GREATEST. His lyrics are witty, he’s made plenty of commercial and club bangers. Nas can’t touch this boy!
Pac was cool but not lyrically creative in my opinion.

“Not lyrically creative”…blasphemy x20!!!
Name 1, yeah just 1, Jay-Z album that is more ‘lyrically drenched’ than “2Pacalypse Now”?. Not riding a dead man d*ck but homeboy was talented, NASIR is on the same level interms of ‘lyrically potency’.
*Remember “REWIND”?, Jay-Z ass has already been “Ethered”.

Jayz is not even the better rapper ever. Just think about it all songs period can be made into rap verse. So the greatest rappers ever are all old school r&b.

I’m with MM. Jay is the best to ever do it. 12 albums in. He’s consistently put out more hot material than any other rapper EVER! Who can contend with the dude’s lyrical ability? No one… Pac wasn’t really lyrical people.

Nas est pour moi le meilleur rappeur vivant! Jay-Z est sans doute dans le Top 3 avec Tupac mais le meilleur qui est pris un micro est Nas!

Okay…let me keep it real. TUPAC was WHACK as a lyricist. He was an excellent actor and made pretty good songs that had social meaning but anyone can do that.
Jay-Z is the best rapper to do it since Biggie. RIP.

12 albums of fire…please ‘Kingdom Come’, ‘American Gangster’ and the potential flop ‘The Blueprint 3′…with shit like those he is ‘automaticaly disqualified’. Even beyond the DEAD pac has produced better material and jay get worst with time.
Jay isn’t bad but putting himself in the lineup for GREATEST RAPPER EVER isn’t just idiotic, it’s laughable.
maybe u and everyone else needs to analyze what u are saying:
1. Greatest – highest in quality; of high or superior quality or performance;
2. EVER – At all times; always
Now Jay might qualify for GREAT, but GREATEST?…EVER?
Doesn’t matter what happen in NASIR’S personal life *remember micheal?* he is truly a force to be reckoned with… now, i might be on a pipe and not ready to come down, but thats a different discussion

I don’t show my face on here much but I definately had to chime in on this one… I would have to agree that jay-z is the best of all time… no offense to Biggie but I gotta say the man was garbage… well I shouldn’t go that far but he was magnified and put on a pedestal because of his premature death not because of his superior lyrics. I’m not going to take it from him, he had some nice tracks and a good flow but i could not listen to his albums all the way through, I’ve forced myself to do it before just so i can atleast honest about him. But he never purely did it for me. The things I think you have to do to be considered as one of the greatest is
1- Being able to be consitent with your music- Jay proved that with every album he did, Ms. Behave I gotta disagree with you about his so called flops. 1st up his return kingdom come aside from the budlight gimmick and that supposed strip club song it was a great album… it’s just Jay was showing maturity n thats something a lot of people don’t like too see. If you break down a lot of those songs you will see how creatice he is.
2-Being able to consistently sell and worldwide not just nation attention- Thats another thing he held down. I can say str8 up people from all over know Jay-z’s songs from all walks of life, I was in amsterdam and went to his concert and he had a packed crowd quoting his verses word by word and get this english damn sure aint their first language what other rapper has garnered attention like that. I’m not talkin nothing from Nas cause lyrically has down Nas has Jay-Z beat but he doesn’t have the consistincey and appeal to draw a mass like Jay
3- Record sells and concert sells- I just got one thing to sum this up fast men lie, women lie, numbers don’t lie
4- lyrical- Now I’m not going to sit here and say Jay-z is the best lyricist out but as far as the best who are actually successful hands down I would have to say yes. Look at people like Joe budden, he is lyrical as shit but you have to have a lot more than just pure lyrics to become an Icon
and one thing I gotta address Tupac… he was the greatest but he was in his own league…. he wasn’t a lyrical rapper, he wasn’t to much on word play but he always had a way with words that would paint a vivid picture for you even if you didn’t live the same lifesytle and have the same struggle he is a greatest in his own…. great lyricist no great poet most definately there is a big difference between the two.
But I know most will feel some points I made, I damn sure aint checkin for typos tho… this is too damn long already lol
shit time for a cold one

[Reply]
August 3rd, 2009 at 9:41 pm
come on cutie…lets look at facts. Wikipidia or guiness book of records might help. I hear pips talking about great lyrisist, poets and things like flow… Use any to make your point. Pac remains the best selling rapper of all time, if thats not what we look at which is how i believe is the best way to judge, then i will conclude this to be a matter of personal preference.
[Reply]
August 3rd, 2009 at 10:09 pm
@ Wannaknow- Number of albums sold is not really a GOOD referrence point. The reason being, is that Nelly sold more records than a lot of WAY better rappers and he’s no where in the top 10 greatest Emcees.
I think the majority would agree that Jay-Z is the greatest rapper to ever do it. Tupac was ok. I liked some of his songs but his lyrics were just generic.
Jay-Z has had way more HIT SONGS than Tupac or any other rapper for that matter. There is no denying his talent.

CWBB, I got to disagree with you. Joe Camel may be talented, have more money that he knows what to do with, and have more hits than Joe Jackson’s wife cloned a million times but this is from an INDUSTRY stance. White America made him what he is.
Best from each region:
EC – Immortal Technique
WC – 2PAC
MW – Twista and Tech N9ne
DS – Scarface
So Jay Z is NOT the best of all time. He can’t hold a flame to any of the niggas I just mentioned and I’ve been spitting for what will be 13 YEARS next year! I know my shit!

“Jay-Z is the best rapper to do it since Biggie. RIP.”
1. Stop with this KEEP IT REAL shit, you MTV worshipping dickhead!
2. If anyone could make a song with social meaning, why do we have faggots like Plies, G Unit, and Soulja Bitch and Gayrab in the game? Why is there so much emphasis on SWAG? Answer me that!
3. The only reason BIG got there is because of Puff’s pole smoking ass. His job security record precedes him as having the most dropped artists (Cases in point: Dream, Shyne, 112, Lil’ Cease, Da Band…need I go on?). He STILL owns the rights to Jadakiss’ publishing. I think rap is just music spoken and not sung. If that’s the case all songs tell a story. That would make the old r&b singers great rappers. narrow it down from there you would get a hell of a line up of the best rapper ever….

Hell fuck no!!!!!! I wont get into an argument about my preference or anyone elses but I like the shit Pac was doing it was more real life struggles and I could relate to his shit better than Jay-Z. Pac was “The wire” and Jay-Z was “Lifestyles of The Rich and Famous” It’s all about what you been through in life. It would take a day to totaly break it down but. Jay-Z has been exposed several times. Cam’ron but him on blast with the medely that proved Jigga’s genius was more borrowed than origional and like Ms.Behave said ” Remember “REWIND”?, Jay-Z ass has already been “Ethered”. “Oh and Eminem did Kill him on his own shit”
As for Biggie, he only had 2 albums, he cant even be put into the conversation due to his small body of work. If that is the case then an argument can be made for Bo Jackson being the best Running back to play football.
But hey, I respect everyones choice.

Jay just gotta rap and get me to turn the volume up when he spit like he used to.. But he doesn’t do that for me no more I turn it down.. It could be the beats or the topics.. Damn where all the reasonable doubt producers @ Jay? No ID; Preemo and so on.. Rea rap needs real producers..

Jay-Z cant hold a candle to Pac…….Rap is more than saying slick shit that rhymes. I have never seen Jay-z say anything of substance, nothing to ever let us know that he knowas anything other that money, hos, clothes, cars or drugs. In order to be considered a great rapper you have to have some substance….dont you?? I mean if you gonns tell us all about Coke, at least teach us something other than what it cost on the street. Listen to Cocaine By UGK.
Shit Pac didnt have the luxury of having the Super Producerr working with him the way that Jay-Z did. Pac didnt work with the Neptunes, Timbaland, swizz Beats and all of those commercialized ass producers for his commercialized ass songs. He did one song with Dre and thats it as far ass Super producers. Pac songs were not covered up by catchy ass beats and sing songy hooks. You knew exactly what he was saying without having to listen through the production. Jay-Z is great because of a line from the movie Soulmen. When the dude from the Nick Cannon Show said “good artist borrow, great artist steal” Killer Mike says that Jay-Z Stole DOA from him Mike dropped a song called Man up a month before Jay dropped DOA You be the Judge!!!

Jay-Z is a LEGEND, ICON & a GENIUS! He’s the greatest!PERIOD, YOUR FAVORITE WOULD LOVE TO BE WHERE JAY IS. And you can’t deny it. None of your favorite MCs have achieved 1/4 of the shit Jay has. His RESUME alone proves why he’s the “KING OF RAP”.
10 REASONS WHY JAY-Z IS THE GREATEST MC OF ALL-TIME
1. Jay-Z is the only hip hop artist other than 2Pac and Eminem to sell more than 50 million albums worldwide. The rest of the rappers in the game are not even close. Plus Pac is dead and Eminem is white, so what does that say about Jay.hmm!
2. Hov has the best discography in hip hop PERIOD! He has more classic albums than any of your favorite rappers ( Reasonable Doubt, Hard Knock Life, The Blueprint, The Black Album & American Gangster). And when I say classics I mean albums that standout. And every last one of his 10 albums went platinum or more. Plus two of his albums are among Rolling Stone’s ” 500 Greatest Albums of All-time.”
3. Hes the first rapper to headline an a major all-hip hop 52-city tour called “The Hard Knock Life Tour”,in 1999 with DMX, Method Man & Redman. And lets not forget the Roc The Mic Tour, Jay-Z and Friends Tour, The Water 4 Life, and The Heart of the City Tour with Mary J. Blige.
4. MTV and Rolling Stones magazine already named Jay-Z ” the Greatest MC of All-time.”
5. Jay-Z Makes History as 1st Hip-Hop Artist to Headline Glastonbury Festival. In 2008,He put on a world-class show and won of doubters over in the U.K front in of 180, 000 people. Not to mention this festival is known for live bands that only play guitars.
6. He is the only rapper in this decade to sell-out Madison Square Garden by HIMSEF (before then hip-hop acts had barely graced it’s stage), which hadn’t been sold out since the Beastie Boys and Run DMC in the 80’s. No rapper is doing that right now without special guest. What rapper has ever done that. NONE!
7. Jay-Z tied Elvis Presley for the most Number One albums by a solo performer with the release of his 2007 disc American Gangster,. (The Beatles still hold the overall record with nineteen chart toppers). Jay is the only rapper having the most consecutive number one albums debut on the Billboard chart 200 ever. What rapper has ever done that. NONE!
8. Jay-Z was the first rapper to become a corporate entity. He even got a partnership deal with Live Nation for $150 million which is considered the most expensive contract ever awarded to an artist. What rapper in history had ever had a that! NONE. Even Madonna and U2 haven’t gotten those type of deals.
9. Who could deny that Jay-Z didn’t change the sound of hip hop. Jay has already done this at least twice, once with the bling sound of the Neptunes and again with the original Blueprint. All these so called rappers starting getting back to soul samples because of Jay. This explains why all the hottest producers in the game always wanna work with Jay.
10. Jay also completed the 7 City Hangar Tour. What artist would fly to seven cities in 23 hours, performing concerts at all sites? No one. It’s never been done. But Jay-Z He’s only the hip hop artist in history to do 7 cities in less than 24 hours.

I read some of the comments posted here, and those that agree with that stupid question, yes stupid! because who know something, just a litle bit about real hip-hop understand that Jay-Z never will be the greatest rapper ever, that’s just stupid! 2Pac king forever, the most realistic rapper that passed by on planet earth, he changed lifes, his movement for better conditions to the black community, his fight against the oppression and discrimination, he spoke the truth to all the world, noone did something like that! And because that they tried to kill(shut up) him, twice!
2Pac was a genious…

Im dyin at all of the comments of people saying that Jay-Z is the greatest of all time. Tupac will always be the greatest of all time. Like someone else said in a previous post a majority of Jay-Z’s music was full of generic bullshit. I remember when he came out with 99 problems and ppl were talkin bout how it was a great song but what he tlaked about in there was no different than the bullshit other artists come out with. I have to force myself to actually listen to his any of his albums straight thru. All eyes on me, me against the world etc. all of pacs music had a message. i cant say the same for Jay-Z.

Wow, this post has a lot of Gay-Z defenders. I think ppl are confusing record sales wit talent.
Everyone know that Mcdonalds has sold billions of burgers, but if you were asked where to get the best burger in your town, I doubt u would say Micky D’s. it would prolly be some mom and pop joint down the street from where you grew up. My point is this, its all about quality, not quantity with me. I loved Pac for what he did in his short life. The words that he spit were amazing considering how young he was. I too am a poet so I got Pac. Jay is like 40. Pac died at 25. If Pac HAD of lived, its a lot of rappers out here rite now that would have NO career.
I goin to put it like this. Jay-Z is where he is today, because there was no one else to challenge him. Its easy to win a race if u the only one in it. Had Biggie and TUPAC lived ppl would be sayin, Jay who?

Jay-z is the greatest of all time. His lyrics are smooth and he knows how to make them flow. Lil Wayne can stay down because it’s the ROC. Fuck young money. Jay-Z has spread his style all the way over here to the West Coast. Greatest of all time. By the way Smurfette, no offense to Pac R.I.P. but he’s dead. So don’t use him in an argument.

@Christian, if you are great at what u do, and its documented, does that make what u did no longer great because u die? Hell no. MJ was the best entertainer to ever live. Does him being dead change the fact that no other singer/dancer can touch him? No. Just like MLK was a great person and very instrumental in the civil rights movement. Does him being dead mean his influence and ideas should be shoved under a rug? Hell no. So, you can kiss my ass tellin me who to use in an argument as an example and who NOT to use. If you like Jay-Z, cool. I happen to not be a fan. I think its sad that ppl are still comparing these lame ass rappers to someone who died 13 yrs ago this month. If these rappers were soooo great, ppl would be sayin Tupac who, now wouldn’t they? Hasn’t happened. Never will.
Jay-z is great at selling records. Period. Does it make his lyrics more insightful and meaningful than the next rapper, dead or alive? Maybe, its all in the mind of the public. Some like Jay, some, like me, don’t. To each his own.
I will say this, u will never see a Jayz cd in my ride. I listen to rappers I can relate to and me being a poet, u can imagine who I listen to.

Tilda Swinton is so beautiful! I wish she would take as much care when she’s attending events cause I think sometimes in real life, she’s not as striking cause she probably doesn’t care… pretty photos!
