Mediaoutrage Chats With Professional Industry Make-Up Artist Asha Campbell
Posted by Media Outrage on August 14th, 2009
Mediaoutrage.com had the opportunity to chat with professional make-up artist and owner/founder of Double Take Make Up Artistry, Asha Campbell. Asha has done plenty of work in the entertainment and bridal industries. She is an example of a highly motivated and intelligent sista who transformed passion and expertise into profit. Being that we constantly posts celebrities that seem to lack basic make-up application knowledge, we decided to reach out to someone who specializes in getting pretty. She is captured in action in the picture above. Asha shared some interesting tips and information below.
“I look different, and I love it!” This is often the response I get from my artistry. I carefully study the subject before me, observing all the details of her face. I see what features jump out at me first and make a mental note of it. As I’m applying skin care products, I’m observing of the texture of the skin, the shape of the eyes, the height of the cheek bones and any variation in skin tone. All of these details play a huge part in the types of products that I choose for each client.
Each client is a blank canvas just waiting for me to put my expertise to use to maximize the potential that is there. I’m able to see the beauty in everyone long before any products are applied to their face. That’s part of my gift, to be able to enhance God given natural beauty without over shadowing the person. This is the most important part of my job.
I often hear things like “I don’t want to look made up” and “please don’t make me look like a clown”. Although that should be a given, I realize that many women have images of heavy caked on foundation in an off shade, bright blue eye shadow smeared from the lash line to the eyebrows and harsh red lipstick in an ungodly shade dancing in their heads. They remember the days when women of color could not purchase foundation that matches our skin tone perfectly.. It was always a shade or two off. We were often told that certain hues did not look right on us so we got accustomed to only wearing “earth tones” or nothing at all.
I’d like to take a moment to break us out of the mold. Most of us have either red or yellow undertones to our skin (look at the highest part of your cheekbone below your eye). Red, yellow and blue are primary colors which means that all other colors are derived from these. This means that pretty much any color applied in the correct way, will look good on us. The sky is the limit! The days of strictly browns and beiges are long gone. We can proudly adorn some of the most vibrant colors created if we so choose to.
As a makeup artist, It’s my job to help you break out of that mold and learn how to express the real you in a new way. I think that’s why I get the response that I do. Women know that they are beautiful, but when they see that beauty enhanced with color, highlighting, and contouring it makes their outer appearance match what they feel on the inside… beautiful! “As I’m applying skin care products, I’m observing of the texture of the skin, the shape of the eyes, the height of the cheek bones and any variation in skin tone.”→ @ MO…should be “I’m observant of the texture/I’m observing the texture…”
On to article…
She sounds like she has an understanding of what is required to ENHANCE and not makeup women…I rarely use makeup, i can literally tell u how many times i have worn it, seriously…
I’m more of what goes in comes out…so if my skin is dry, i drink water and if oily remove fatty/oily products from meals…preventative rather than curative (my motto).
If the 4 photos are her works… i’ll comment…
*Photo1…eyeshadow and eyebrows are flawless hoever skin could use some concealer for underlying pimples.
*Photo2…nicely done, although the face could use makeup base that has less sheen to look more natural, HELL to to NO!!! on peacock lashes.
*Photo3…PERfection!!- although girl looks like she has in blue/grey contacts (hell no)…but Makeup wise, real impressive.
*Photo4…Too clownish. Makeup matches skin tone perfectly, however eyeshadow and lip color clash rather than complement…based on strap of dress(assumption) she is going for a sophisticated look and eyeshadow needs to be downplayed and look less ‘party’ like.
That’s my take on things, Tek’ it or leave it.

Interesting and even though I know nothing about make-up I do know that my co-worker’s grill looks like she went face first in a strawberry cake. Just ridiculous. And she’s nice looking but that ish is caked on horribly. Im going to tell her to log on and read this lmao!

I like the colors and the way the foundation looks natural. Usually, the cream I use on a woman’s face is white and creamy, so I like the way she puts color and flavor to her foundation.

Truthfully speaking…the couple times that I’ve gotten my make-up done by a ‘professional’ make-up artist I’ve come out looking like a complete clown..(Both times I had to go home..wash my face and do it myself)..which I had no problem doing considering I’ve worked in the field myself..but you’d think they’d know what they’re doing..clearly not (in my case)..I say, play around with it..see what works and what doesn’t for YOU..what may look good on some other chic may not necessarily look as good on you so you can’t only go by that..Now, on to the pics..Not ‘hating’ or anything but I’m not the least bit impressed and I will leave it at that..

I though the whole ideal of makeup is to make it look natural. I also though blue eye shadow was out of style alone with gold. I don’t like bat-lashes to unnatural. I wear lip stick and mascara. Tried foundation once and did not like the feel of it on my skin. Now I can talk perfume all day, but makeup not my thing.

@ Random…u are not the fisrt person i’ve heard say that…that they do it better than the profs, i’ve witness it myself and it was not good…some makeup artist don’t understand the ‘ART’ of makeup and instead do paint jobs on clients…
@ YISI…blue eyeshadows are in with gold, if done ‘properly’ they look quite wonderful, although they are more of a ‘party’ color than ‘daytime’ color…
Many women and apparently makeup artist don’t understand that they’re different colors for different occasions and for time of day. Same as ‘wedding’ makeup is different from regular and ‘morning’, makeup is different from ‘daytime’ and ‘night’ makeup.

I can NEVER do my makeup as good as the professionals!!! Asha is flawless! I love her work, especially the first picture of the bride. The problem I have is when I do my makeup, it looks okay, but when I take a picture you can barely see it. If I look at a video tape of myself performing, it looks as if it’s not even there.

I like the pics of the models. Is it very harmful to your skin to sleep in make-up over night? I have always wondered that. I don’t really wear make-up on a daily basis. Only for special occassions. Nice to see a young woman so successful. But could someone please answer that question because i need to know lol.
[Reply]
August 14th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
@Joy..Yes, it is..here’s something I found which gives a basic explanation as to why it’s not such a good idea to sleep with make-up one..
“Why is it such a bad thing to sleep with your makeup on?
Your skin, like you, needs to “breathe.” Sleep is when our minds and bodies are rejuvenated. Hair and nails grow more quickly during these hours than at any other time of the day. Your skin needs to be free of products which will simply block
your pores and inevitably cause breakouts. Consider this: If a
patch to help stop smoking can be absorbed through your skin,
then so can your makeup!
Moreover, it is before bed when you should give special
attention to thoroughly cleansing your skin from the day’s grime
and oil build-up and use products which will leave you with a
soft, firm, wrinkle-free, luminous complexion in the morning.
After cleansing and toning, choose a skin care regimen (or
assorted products) which works for you and stay with it. Read
the ingredients; items with alpha-hydroxy components (vegetable
and fruit acids) will help your own skin to renew itself,
ridding itself of dead cells. Thus, you won’t awake with clogged
pores and troubled skin, but a wide-awake, ready-to-paint
“canvas” for the next day.”

@ Joy…Makeup clogs your pores giving you a dull looking complexion. Since you sweat at night and roll around, it mixes and will clog your pores, Serious Acne will come. It can also cause wrinkles.
It also damages your skin and you will get breakouts. Your pores open more when you sleep, so the harmful chemicals in makeup get inside and under your skin and clog your pores. It causes wrinkles, acne, pimples. It just makes you look bad.
If you forgot once or twice then whatever. But if you do it every night then that’s bad. Iif you use a mineral/organic based makeup, you can sleep with it,
like for a day, but it is still harmful just less than those with harsh chemicals.

Thanks Random and Ms. Behave. I don’t really wear make-up a lot. My friend says he likes me better without any so i like to go natural unless it’s a wedding im in or something. But i have slept in my make-up several times and a gilfriend told me that it wasnt damaging to my skin, that that was just a myth lol. But my mom told me it was but she doesn’t wear make-up. Thanks though.

good read. i dont wear make-up only because my mom didn’t allow me to wear it at all until i was 18 and going on the prom. so i never put it on my skin. i like the pics. are there different kinds of make-up for different nationalities? that might sound stupid but i just don’t know. when i get married if i choose not to wear make-up would that make me look crazy?
MO i would like to see more posts about natural beauty tips on here if you can.

@Quiana Loves Omar … it is ur day u can do whatever u like…if u have good skin go for it, u can just opt for lipstick/gloss and eyeshadow to accentuate…but it’s ur choice and u should be more concerned about ur feeling/comfort than what others think, especially on a day designated for u.

Woa. Quiana I don’t know anything about make-up which probably disqualifies my input but im going to give it to you anyway. Don’t walk down an ailse to get married with NO MAKE-UP on! That’s just ridiculous. MY opinion. Asha From DoubleTakeMakeUP nice work. Thats a catchy name.

Luv your work Asha! My cousin is a make-up artist as well down in DC. She was fortunate enough to work with Diddy one time. She said she thinks he would have preferred a man do his make-up. Lmao!
Republican Voter I never see you on the site anymore lol.

@Quiana Loves Omar… don’t follow him [RP], it doesn’t make sense u do it if ur not comfortable… there are many women who wear makeup DAILY who can’t stand up to my BARE face, so if ur skin is good or flawless go for it…there always organic based makeup to choose from and u can add a concealer if u have issues with ur skin on that day…
Seeing as though u rarely wear makeup, u might get nervous or just forget and brush ur skin on ur white gown… can u imagine going down the aisle like dat or worst have it in ur wedding pics … tragic!!
DO U…that’s all i can say

Just my opinion about the make-up. Ive never seen a woman get married without wearing make-up. Been to plenty of wedddings.

i iuv the eyes on all the pics except the lashes on the white girl. Other than that I was always told that if you go heavy on the eyes, you need to go light on the lips. By “light” I mean a bit more neutral, so that your eye color and lip color wont compete with each other. This is what i feel on #4, lip color is too heavy for the eyeshadow. But other than that they all look fabulous! This lady is very talented. Not everyone will agree on everything, but bottom line they do look good.

Wow girl those pics are beautiful!!! Nice how you did it up with the blue!! Good to show people not to always go with your more common “black” smokey eye, switch it up and use more bold colors. Great job. Keep it up and just ignore the haters because they could only WISH to be standing where you are standing, and going to be standing in the NEAR future.
