Posted by Media Outrage on December 14th, 2009

People everywhere even the critics are noticing the bang up job Mo’Nique did in Precious.

Via Eurweb:

BET talk show host Mo’Nique has picked up the supporting-actress award for “Precious” from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

The actress won for her role as an abusive welfare mother in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.”

Christoph Waltz has earned the supporting-actor prize for “Inglourious Basterds,” while director Jason Reitman and writer Sheldon Turner shared the screenplay prize for “Up in the Air.”

The critics’ prizes are among the first of awards season, which marks the long run-up to the Oscars on March 7. Academy Award nominations come out Feb. 2.

The Los Angeles critic group’s other awards were to be announced later Sunday and were not available at press time.

Mediaoutrage-  Congrats to Mo’Nique!  How many of you have seen the film already?

Best actress will probably be reserved for Gabby Sidibe herself.

I saw it as a bootleg, & I thought it cut bc it was bootleg. But no, the movie is just that short.

You guys didn’t see the whole movie if you saw it on bootleg, they had half of the film on bootleg, there was a whole other half to the film. You guys should have gone to the theatre to watch it.

MONIQUE DID THE DAMN THING AND I AM SO PROUD OF HER! SHE DESERVES ALL THAT SHE GETS. WE AS A BLACK PEOPLE DOWN OUR OWN MORE THAN ANYONE I KNOW. WE HAVE SPENT CENTURIES COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW WE DON’T GET NOTHING AND WHEN IT HAPPENS WE STILL COMPLAIN. IT IS SO SAD THAT WE DON’T EVER SUPPORT EACH OTHER. I WONDER HOW MANY AFRICAN AMERICANS GOT OFF OF THEIR ASSES AND WENT TO SUPPORT THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG. I SAW MORE WHITES IN THE THEATRE YESTERDAY THAN I SAW BLACKS. NO, MOST OF US ARE SITTING AROUND WAITING TO BUY IT FROM POOKIE AND JUNEBUG RATHER THAN SUPPORT US! GEESH! I HAVE HEARD MORE NEGATIVE ABOUT MONIQUE THAN POSITIVE.

    Stop typing in all caps.

Monique DONT deserve it. We deserve better & want better. Halle shouldnt have been the first afrAm lady 2 win for that horrid movie monster’s ball. She was better in LOSING ISAIAH! We have many great actresses:
    Cicely Tyson
    Diahann Carroll
    Alfre Woodard
    Viola Davis

This role is not the best of the best IMO.
Mo She needs better interviewing skills as well.

& millions of AfrAm got off their 8sses & supported Princess Tiana. That is why it made. So STFU.

Halle was not the first Black woman to win an Oscar. The late Hattie McDaniel was.

Get it MsTX, school ‘em girl!

And, while we’re all on movies, pick up a BOOK Black people! If you read ‘Push’ you’ll see that it’s a pretty short window into her life. The movie was done well- not as graphic & Mo’Nique wasn’t really big enough IMO but she acted her ass OFF! She deserves that award and whatever others that come…

I agree too. And I went and saw “The Princess And The Frog” Friday when it came out.

The moving was good, but very disturbing. They need to give her that Oscar because she really played that role. Congrats!

Monique acted her ass off. She deserved that award. The part in the movie that really made me look at monique as an excellent actress was at the end. When she was crying and begging Mariah carey to bring precious back. You could feel her emotions.

    [Reply]

    lilkunta Reply:

@leul: I didnt feel her emotions.
To me it ws just ok acting by Monique bc I ve seen her real character. I dont feel it was a stretch 4 monique 2 be in that role.

Gabourey however I think did the damn thing & she deserves all the awards.

  9. CaramelKiss14 Says:

I mean I don’t want to rain on her parade as I believe she’s always had acting chops, however, I just think these damned award folks are setting a pattern of giving us awards for playing villains (Denzel Washington -Training Day), broke down, single, horny mother (Halle Berry – Monster’s Ball) and now this???? wTF?

Jaime Foxx as Ray Charles is the only that I can think that doesn’t fit into this category.

    [Reply]

    Ms. Behave Reply:

Ur right about that, even Ray was a coke addict so they probably liked that *smh… waiting to see a MLK movie- wait a minute, he did get assassinated lol… i think i KILLS them to see BLACK projected in a POSITIVE light… it JUST KILLS THEM! Like we’re a ‘threat’ or something, like the saying when we ‘relax’ our hair, white ppl feel relax… i think they really FEAR us for how GREAT we might be, them suckas betta deal with it cause we are making strides even with shackles on, can u imagine if we actual had EQUAL OPPORTUNITY?!

    I actually agree w dick.
The movie was overhyped. I didnt feel anything after I saw it.

All Monique did was be mean. What was the stretch in that?
Plus Mo was on for a lil while.

If any1 wins an award it should be Gabourey.

I have not seen the movie but I am smart enough to know that a lot of this movies hype came when Haro and Tyler Perry attached their name to it. Maybe the people that didnt like the performance by Mo, should put the blame where it belongs. I honestly dont think it would have got this much press if it wasnt for Harpo saying how great it was.

  16. MissTX85 Says:

Yeah since they give the Oscars to our Black asses for playing villains and shit, if Mo don’t get one for this movie they’ll be dead wrong.

Congrats to her on getting the previously stated award though. The movie was great in my opinion.

People receive Oscars for playing believable roles that are out of their normal typecast. Monique is a comedian, with the exception of the movie Phatgirlz, this was the only film that she stepped out of her typecast and made you believe that she was this character, the same with Denzel in Training Day. In other words, I can understand why Monique might receive an Oscar nomination for this role, same as Denzel won for training day. Jennifer Hudson played the hell out of Effie in dreamgirls, it wasn’t so much about her singing that won her the Oscar, it was the fact that she acted the hell out of that role.
