LOS ANGELES – Haitian-born rapper Wyclef Jean spoke out Saturday in defense of his foundation after charity screening groups raised concerns about its accounting practices.
Jean said he was baffled by the timing and nature of criticism of The Wyclef Jean Foundation Inc., which has already raised more than $2 million to help earthquake victims.
“It is impossible for me to even comprehend the recent attacks on my character and the integrity of my foundation,” he said in a statement. “The fact that these attacks come as we are mobilized to meet the greatest human tragedy in the history of Haiti only serves to perplex me even further.”
Jean, a 37-year-old Grammy-winning artist, has been imploring followers to text “Yele” to 501501 to donate $5 to his foundation in support of Haitian earthquake victims.
The foundation, also known as Yele Haiti, intends to airlift medical supplies, water and Clif Bars to Haiti using a FedEx plane early next week, according to foundation president Hugh Locke.
An Associated Press review of tax returns and independent audits provided by Jean’s foundation showed that it was closely intertwined with Jean’s businesses.
Jean said he has never profited personally through his work with the organization and he has committed significant amounts of his time and money to the charity.

I know Wyclef has been helping his country for along time now. And has been putting light on the struggle of helping his land since he has come out. I know this dirty as american government has alot of shady shit with it. Black people remember Katrina when those crackers were supposed to be helping them they weren’t. White folks want more to due with Haiti after they defeated them over 200 years ago. So don’t be surprise if they use obama ass as a scapegoat to due their dirt behind him. We as African descendants should not believe in anything white folks does in this land. I believe Wyclef whole heartedly, he is real and truthful. So don’t believe in any other Bullshit press media tell nothing but lies that they don’t help anybody unless they think they have something to gain in the long run. Remember this country is broke, China owns America and theirs is nothing it can due. Help Haiti and Wyclef and support his organization Yele.org

When I first heard about the allegations surrounding the Wyclef Jean Foundation I let it go in one ear and out the other.
I agree with Wyclef, it they thought somthing was shady about his organization before why bring it to light now?
In the wake of this horrific tragedy why is this even irrelevant now? Of course we all know why…there are millions and millions, possibly billions of dollars involved and this is a poor black country with a black man taking the reins trying to help his country in their time of need. Need I say more?
I agree with you LowRidz about the starving kids in the third world countries.
Those commercials have been airing for decades and the kids are still starving as bad or worse since I first saw those commericals as a kid.
Let us not forget about the Muscular Dystrophy telethon with Jerry Lewis? That disease should be wiped out by now as long as that telethon has been running. I bet we’ll never hear about any audits for that foundtion.

Why don’t they bring up the RED CROSS, and the mismanagement of funds there by the top heads of that organization.
We are asked to donate to them also,so what has transpired since their little scandal to make them above board?????

Why does it taks a and earthquake for these organizers to want to help a poor Country in their time of need? With its economical condition, Haiti has been in need for over 100 years now. No one is saying that giving a few bucks is killing them now. My question is, are we doing all that we can on a day to day basis? It just occured to me that I could do more, but with stuff like this coming up, how do we know that our contributions will touch ground. I guess the way of the world is a big factor in keeping us from taking care of it.

I think they are just fearful that Wycleaf’s organization will receive more funding than the others due to his celebrity status. And I assure you the other organizations will not use 100% funding on the devastation in Haiti but will use a portion of it to cover salaries etc. So honestly speaking Wycleaf’s organization is the only organization that will guarantee the help of Haiti after all who is more concerned about their people than a native Haitian.

Why are they doing this right now? It is not the time for that. Nothing but damn racists if you ask me. Like ‘Clef said, if they thought some shady shit was going down, why not say something before now? Why wait ’til the earthquake happens and the organization is getting these contributions to help those people? It seems like they wanna find a problem so that they can keep the money to themselves.

A pledge is not the same as a donation. White people are making all these plegdes about helping Haiti without the true intent of helping or rebuilding. See…yele.org doesn’t pledge they DONATE, and white people are angry about this because they don’t want Haiti to be rebuilt, they want the people to starve. Lets see how many of these white oragnizations that pledge will actually come through for the Haitian people. YELE ORG HAS GIVEN TO THE PEOPLE AND THESE FALSE ALLEGATIONS ARE JUST TO BREAK A BLACK MAN DOWN FROM HELPING HIS PEOPLE!!!
