In a strange scene toward the end of Sunday’s Los Angeles Lakers Game 4 win over the Denver Nuggets, a misguided attendee decided to waltz onto the court just before halftime. According to local police and the Denver Post and Yahoo! Sports, 20-year-old Savannah McMillan-Christmas was immediately arrested for trespassing, released and will appear in court Monday. The woman, who nearly made it to the 3-point line from her courtside seat, apparently has some alleged history with the Denver Nuggets before. Here’s Yahoo! Sports’ Marc J. Spears, who tweeted from the game:

Kurt Schwartzkopf, chief marketing officer at the Pepsi Center said the woman did not appear intoxicated, but was disoriented. He said the woman was picked up and taken home by her mother.

Jackson said it was off-duty Denver officers at the game who cited McMillan and escorted her out. TNT reported that the woman had been banned from Pepsi Center in the past for stalking a former Nugget player. Yahoo Sports reported that she stalked Kenyon Martin when he was with the team.

Kobe Bryant’s head bobbed and nodded over and over. Between the locker room and the loading dock inside Staples Center on Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Lakers star had been asked to rewind his mind back to the end in Dallas a season ago, back to the darkness of a defeat that left him fearing finality. Eyes closed tightly, Bryant repeated the words, “Yes … Yes … Yes …”

Finally, Bryant let out a long sigh and insisted, “I wondered how I was ever going to play basketball again.”

His arthritic knee had gone bone on bone, making every step an excruciating exercise. Bryant felt like the end was creeping closer. He couldn’t practice and couldn’t move with authority on the floor. “There were a lot of thoughts, a lot of self-evaluating going on, wondering, how can I ever be effective again? How am I going to play despite this knee? I couldn’t move. It was just so painful. There was nothing I could do.

“But now I feel brand new, man.”

The solution had come with blood-platelet therapy in Germany, a doctor who repaired the knee with a procedure that has athletes now flocking overseas. The pain is gone, the movement is back, and Bryant’s 38 points in a 104-100 Game 2 victory over the Denver Nuggets resembled something straight out of the time capsule. He was devastating in the low post because the strength of that knee again allows him to hold off defenders. He was deadeye on the perimeter and responsive of the need to play through Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol on the inside.

Bryant made that one-legged Dirk Nowitzki jumper and a coast-to-coast no-look pass to Bynum for a Showtime flush. He chased down Al Harrington on a fast break in the fourth quarter and pinned Harrington’s bid for a dunk against the backboard.

“It’s not like he’s got an astonishing vertical,” Bryant said. “I didn’t have to jump too high.”

Bryant smiled coyly, but he knew the truth. The play represented something for him, for these Lakers: another chance. A chance to compete, to be champions again. They have a long way to go, but Bryant, Bynum and Gasol have exploded into these Western Conference playoffs. Bynum has blossomed into a dominant center, and Gasol is playing with such passion and precision. No, the Lakers never should’ve allowed Denver back into Game 2 after blowing a 19-point lead, but they still made the plays to close out the Nuggets.

“I never really understood the talk at the beginning of the year,” Bryant told Yahoo! Sports. “I look at Andrew – his talent, his work ethic – and I look at Pau, and I’m looking at a Big Three. And I’m asking myself: ‘Am I missing something? Am I missing something here?’

“And then what Ramon [Sessions] has brought to us, and the way Metta [World Peace] was playing, and I just never understood people writing us off.”

When a shin injury kept Bryant off the floor for seven straight games in the final month of the regular season, it turned out to be a blessing for him and these Lakers. The rest has benefited his body, and his absence afforded his teammates a chance to take more responsibility, more ownership, onto themselves. Bynum’s 27 points and nine rebounds were pure terror on Tuesday night, and he’s presenting himself like he ought to – as the best center presently playing on this planet.

Bryant believes he’s built a stronger bond with Bynum since All-Star weekend in Orlando. They’re tighter. Truth be told, Bryant feels like that’s the case with everyone on these Lakers.

“Nothing could materialize for us last year. I couldn’t be around my guys, couldn’t practice with them,” Bryant said. “And my personality could not rub off on the team. I could not give them what I’ve been giving them for the last two months.”

Rest assured, Bryant has watched one star after another go down in these playoffs, and it leaves him grateful, gratified for the chance to play. “Right now, I have the opportunity to compete again,” he said. “Last year, I felt like I was on one leg.”

And it still bothers him because Bryant has to come to understand he’s running out of time – his knee won’t stay strong forever. He closed his eyes in the bowels of the Staples Center late Tuesday and hit the rewind button back to the uncertainty, the unnerving end in Dallas last spring. Something else still stays with him, still bothers him, and probably always will.

“I couldn’t give Phil all of me for his last season,” Bryant said.

Phil Jackson is gone now, but Bryant’s finding his way with Mike Brown, with these Lakers, and most of all with a knee that gives him the chance to go the distance again. His longtime trainer, Tim Grover, has been with him most of the season and won’t leave his side much during these playoffs. Now, everything’s changed and Kobe Bryant feels like Kobe Bryant again. When everyone else was resting, Bryant slipped into to Staples Center to take shots around 10 p.m. Monday. Those are things he can do now, things that his knee will support. Feels like old times, except for the pain.

“I couldn’t give Phil all of me, and I couldn’t give it to my teammates either,” Bryant said. “But now, it’s like, ‘Let’s see. I’m here. I’m 100 percent. I want to see what’s what.’ ”

When Bryant walked out of the arena in Dallas a year ago, it felt like a dark cloud trailed him. It felt like the end, and it frightened him. Things couldn’t go on like that for him, and the solution finally showed itself over a long, hot angry summer.

Now, he chases his sixth championship – only he feels like he’s chasing it for real. No one gets cheated this year. No one beats Kobe Bryant without getting his best shot, and he wondered whether that would ever be true again.

The NBA responded to Metta World Peace’s latest act of aggression with a seven-game suspension that will lighten the Los Angeles Lakers troublemaker’s wallet and playoff schedule.

World Peace was suspended on Tuesday for throwing a vicious elbow at Oklahoma City’s James Harden, keeping the Lakers’ starting small forward sidelined for most of the first postseason round.

World Peace was ejected from Sunday’s game against the Thunder for striking Harden in the head with the back of his elbow, giving Oklahoma City’s top reserve a concussion. The former Ron Artest claimed the blow was an accidental, overzealous celebration of a dunk, yet even Kobe Bryant and his Lakers teammates weren’t defending his inexplicable actions.

“It’s hard to get into a guy’s head and know exactly what happened in that situation,” Bryant said. “I haven’t really spoken to him about it. You’ve really got to ask him.”

World Peace will miss the Lakers’ season finale on Thursday at Sacramento and the Lakers’ next six games. The playoffs open Saturday, and Los Angeles is likely to be the Western Conference’s third seed — and Oklahoma City is locked into the No. 2 seed, meaning the clubs could meet right after World Peace’s suspension ends in the second round.

He will lose nearly $348,000 in salary if he serves the entire suspension this year. If the Lakers exit the playoffs swiftly, the remainder of the suspension must be served next season.

World Peace still hasn’t answered media questions about his actions, but he issued a brief statement on his website, promising to follow up with a podcast.

“I apologize to the Oklahoma City Thunder fans and the OKC organization,” World Peace wrote on ronartest.com. “I look foward (sic) to getting back on the floor with my teammates and competing for the Lakers’ fans.”

Commissioner David Stern alluded to World Peace’s lengthy history of on-court altercations and strange behavior in announcing the penalty in a statement. Although Harden appears to be recovering well, he hasn’t been cleared to return to the Thunder.

“The concussion suffered by James Harden demonstrates the danger posed by violent acts of this kind, particularly when they are directed at the head area,” Stern said in a statement. “We remain committed to taking necessary measures to protect the safety of NBA players, including the imposition of appropriate penalties for players with a history of on-court altercations.”

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said the team accepted the latest suspension for World Peace, who has two years left on his contract with Los Angeles.

“His most recent lapse in judgment is not to be condoned or accepted,” Kupchak said after praising World Peace as largely a model citizen with the Lakers.

“His actions could have seriously injured another player, and his absence during this suspension will hurt our team as well,” Kupchak added. “While we accept the league’s decision, we will be supportive of Metta and try to help him be more professional on the court.”

The suspension is the third career ban of at least seven games for World Peace, whose rap sheet might not fit on a basketball card at this point.

He got an 86-game suspension in 2004 — the longest ban for an on-court incident in NBA history — for jumping into the stands at the Palace of Auburn Hills in the Detroit suburbs to fight fans, and he served a seven-game suspension in 2007 for his no-contest plea on a domestic violence charge.

Even before his odd decision to change his name to promote peace last year, he had largely rehabilitated his image during three seasons with the Lakers, winning the NBA’s top citizenship award last spring for his charity work in mental-health awareness. Yet World Peace also slammed his forearm into the face of Dallas guard J.J. Barea in the closing minutes of a home playoff loss to the Mavericks last season, earning a one-game postseason suspension.

World Peace leveled Harden moments after dunking over Serge Ibaka and Kevin Durant in the second quarter of the Lakers’ double-overtime victory over the Thunder. While pounding his chest with his right arm, World Peace cocked his elbow and threw it at the back and side of Harden’s head.

He claimed the elbow was completely accidental in a brief postgame statement, but later acknowledged on Twitter that the blow “looks bad.”

World Peace didn’t speak to the media after the Lakers’ practice Tuesday, heading to the locker room at the moment media members entered the gym at the Lakers’ training complex. But Bryant acknowledged the obvious problem for the Lakers, who lose a starter and their defensive stopper right before the postseason.

“It’s an unfortunate situation,” Bryant said. “James, from what I hear, is OK. As far as Metta goes, he has to focus on himself, and however many games they give him, they give him. He just has to be prepared, and when he comes back, just step right in and be ready to go.”

Bryant and the Lakers are clearly torn between supporting a teammate and recoiling from World Peace’s actions. Harden and Bryant are friends.

Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks declined to make a significant comment about World Peace before the Thunder hosted Sacramento on Tuesday night. Brooks didn’t weigh in on the possibility World Peace could return from suspension for a second-round matchup with the Thunder.

“I’m not concerned with who we play, as long as we play as hard as we can and play to the best of our abilities,” Brooks said. “You can’t focus on matchups. You can’t focus on individual players.”

Lakers coach Mike Brown, who professed ignorance of what happened after the game, said he finally viewed a replay and spoke with World Peace about it briefly, but said he didn’t attempt an in-depth evaluation of what World Peace was thinking.

“You’re concerned about it,” said Brown, an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers when World Peace precipitated that infamous brawl in the stands. “He’s a starter for us, and he’s important to what we do. … What was going through his mind, I haven’t talked to him. What Metta said is he shouldn’t have done it. He’s got to keep his cool.”

Brown said World Peace gave him the same explanation of the elbow as an excited accident.

“What am I supposed to do, call him a liar?” Brown asked. “He said it was accidental. Now was it accidental or not? I don’t know.”

The Lakers will be further depleted in Thursday’s finale without Matt Barnes. The Sacramento native and backup swingman is out with a sprained right ankle, but the team is optimistic he’ll be back for the playoffs.

With World Peace and Barnes both out, second-year pro Devin Ebanks will get more playing time. Ebanks, who should be fine after dropping a 55-pound weight on his hand Tuesday, played extensive minutes against the Thunder, contributing little offensively but making two big defensive plays in the final minute of the second overtime.

Bryant realizes the Lakers will miss World Peace, who entered perhaps the best stretch of his up-and-down season when Bryant sat down for seven games to rest his bruised shin earlier this month. World Peace is averaging 7.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while regularly matching up against the Lakers’ opponents’ top scorer.

“He was playing extremely well,” Bryant said. “It happened. When he comes back, he’s going to be playing the same way he was playing before he left, if not better. He’ll have time off. He’ll have a chance to get in even better shape. He might be better when he comes back.”

The suspension apparently has cast a pall over World Peace’s life. The Lakers forward was scheduled to appear on Conan O’Brien’s late night talk show but canceled.

Later, World Peace tweeted his apology.

“Thanks for the invite Conan O’Brien . Today was not good timing for me to do your show…. I wanted to do comedy but not much is funny now..,” World Peace wrote.

Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has always been lauded for his self-motivation and drive to be the best. It’s a good thing he has that internal ambition, because according to Bryant, he’s gone through his 16-year career without a true rival on the exterior to push him to succeed.

“I didn’t have one,” Bryant said after scoring 38 points in the Lakers’ 115-107 win over the Sacramento Kings on Friday.

The Lakers play host to the Miami Heat on Sunday. Bryant called it a “measuring stick” game against Miami, which has the third-best record in the league at 28-8 and is 3-0 against Bryant and the Lakers since “The Decision.”

Despite Bryant’s acknowledging that it’s not just another game, he wouldn’t characterize his relationship with LeBron James as a rivalry.

“Not for me,” Bryant said. “I get up for everybody just the same, to be honest. It’s hard for me to turn my meter up any higher than it normally is.”

OK, Bryant was asked, how about Dwyane Wade? After all, Wade plays shooting guard just as Bryant does, Wade has one Finals MVP trophy to Bryant’s two, and Wade has to be close to as competitive as Bryant or else he wouldn’t have given Bryant that hard foul across the face in the All-Star Game.

“He’s too young,” Bryant said. “He’s too young. When I came into the league, he was in elementary school.”

Bryant is three years older than Wade, but was already a seven-year veteran when Wade was drafted in 2003.

Bryant said it is “a little late in the game” for him to develop a rivalry with any current NBA player, so instead he is chasing names in the record books rather than in box scores from the 2011-12 season.

“At this point my rivals, in terms of what I have left to accomplish in my career, (left the game) when Magic (Johnson) and Michael (Jordan) retired in ’98,” Bryant said, referring to the second of Jordan’s three retirements that came after he won his sixth and final championship with the Chicago Bulls. “That’s it. In terms of what I’m looking to accomplish, that’s about it.”

Bryant has five championships, tied with Johnson — who won all of his with the Lakers — and is one ring behind Jordan. Earlier in the season, Bryant said he was “obsessed” with adding another championship to his collection.

“What I have left to accomplish, those players retired a long time ago,” Bryant said.

The San Antonio Spurs’ Tim Duncan won four championships to Bryant’s five throughout their shared careers, but Bryant said while the Spurs might have qualified as a team rival to his Lakers, Duncan’s individual rivalry came against Shaquille O’Neal as a fellow big man.

“He was never in my position,” Bryant said. “He was more Shaq’s rival than mine. As a team, the Spurs were always a team that we had to go through. So from that standpoint, yes, but in terms of personally, no. I’ve outgrown them all, from A.I. (Allen Iverson) when I first came in to (Tracy) McGrady to Vince Carter and so forth and so on.”

Bryant said that he developed the desire to win multiple championships from an early age.

“It’s always what I want to accomplish,” Bryant said. “That’s what you set your goals at. Growing up, watching them, they’ve always won multiple championships and that was always something that I felt like must be done. So, my goal originally when I was a kid and so forth, and when I was a teenager, always started from gauging them.”
