As we said two days ago was a pretty big deal for Kobe Bryant as he further solidified his greatness in NBA history by surpassing Shaq to become the 5th all time leading scorer.

Now watch what he had to say about the accomplishment and his place in history

Last night was special for the man known as Kobe Bryant for several reasons. One of those reasons was he had the opportunity to play in front of his home town crown in Philly. Second and more importantly he surpassed Shaquille O’Neal on the All-Time NBA Scorers list to land in the number 5 slot only behind #4 Wilt Chamberlain, #3 Michael Jordan, #2 Karl Malone, and #1 Kareem-Abdul Jabbar. That’s some exclusive company to be in the midst of. Kobe gave Philly fans something to awe at as he scored 24 points in the first half to surpass Shaq and he only needed 24 points. A timeout was taken and Kobe was given a chance to relish the moment with Derek Fisher as they embraced. Kobe was on fire in the first half as he hit four 3-pointers and jump shot after jump shot. The second half was much different as the Sixers double teamed him every time he touched the ball which forced him to find the open man and allow others to score which led to him only dropping 4 points in the second half and a 95-90 loss for the Lakers. It was still an epic night for Kobe.

*Vanessa Bryant, the former wife of the Kobe Bryant, has once again turned down a huge sum of money to appear on VH1’s “Basketball Wives.”

A source tells The Insider that taking part in reality shows “just isn’t Vanessa’s style,” but stressed that no disrespect was meant to those who do appear.

As previously reported, the couple’s decision not to have a prenuptial agreement in place has resulted in Vanessa acquiring in the divorce three of the couple’s mansions, worth a combined $18.8 million. The couple’s split was said to be caused by Kobe’s numerous infidelities.

“Basketball Wives” producers had offered Vanessa Bryant a spot on the show previously but she declined, despite TMZ suggesting that the show was set to be based around her story. The producers are still holding out hope that their latest, lucrative offer will be enough for her to reconsider.

Vanessa and Kobe have joint custody of their two daughters, aged 9 and 5. The fourth season of “Basketball Wives” is scheduled to premiere on Feb. 20.

Vanessa Bryant has become the Holy Grail for “Basketball Wives“ producers … and TMZ has learned, the people behind the VH1 show are prepping to make her an offer she can’t refuse.

Multiple sources close to the production tell us, producers are putting together “an extremely lucrative pitch for Vanessa” … for her to become a recurring character.

As one source put it, “Vanessa has more than enough storyline and would bring the show to another level.”

As for the timing — we’re told producers never dreamed of approaching Vanessa while she was married to Kobe … and our sources say Vanessa would NOT have been receptive.

Budget constraints were also an issue when the show was in its infant stages — because producers knew Vanessa would be very expensive — but now that BW’s one of the highest rated shows on the network, producers have lots more to spend on talent.

If Vanessa accepts, we’re told producers would instantly make her a LEAD on the LA edition of the show.

Mediaoutrage- This isn’t looking good for #24. We know Vanessa agreeing to sign on for the show would send their ratings through the moon.

Kobe Bryant‘s wife Vanessa is the big winner in their divorce property settlement … TMZ has learned.

Sources connected to the couple and with direct knowledge of the situation tell TMZ … the property settlement agreement is signed, sealed and delivered — a done deal.

Vanessa is walking away with $75 million, which we’re told represents close to half of their total assets, estimated at around $150 million.

TMZ previously reported several transfers of property earlier this year between Kobe and Vanessa.  It turns out, based on the property settlement, Vanessa scored a clean sweep, snagging ALL THREE of the former couple’s mansions in the Newport Beach area.

Vanessa gets the estate the couple was living in, the estate her mom is living in, and she gets the new estate that had been under construction for 2 years and was just completed.  We were told Kobe was moving into the new estate, but that’s not true.  It’s Vanessa’s crib, lock stock and barrel.

Mediaoutrage- That’s a nice come up and that’s only the property – imagine when the judge awards child and spousal support. SMH. Kobe’s about to be playing for the Lakers until the year 2034.

Ever since Michael Jordan retired — all three times, really — the NBA has searched for the heir to his throne. Many players have popped up as pretenders to the throne, from Harold Miner to Jerry Stackhouse to Vince Carter. In recent years, people have stopped trying to find a clone and just searched for a similarly dominant great player. If you ever wondered why LeBron James is seen as such a failure, a lot of it has to do with his inability to meet the example set by Jordan.

There are many great players in the NBA these days, most of whom have never been directly compared to Jordan. Nevertheless, His Airness says only one player comes close enough to his greatness to merit the comparison. Not surprisingly, that player is Kobe Bryant. Here’s what Roland Lazenby, a great writer currently working on a Jordan book, tweeted on Sunday (via PBT):

Kobe’s ultimate competition is MJ. That’s why MJ watches him. MJ made people think what he was doing wasn’t human. Ditto the Kobester.

I never said Kobe was better than MJ. MJ just told me Kobe’s the only one to have done the work, to deserve comparison.

Congratulations, Kobe: Your life’s work has meant something. All that time spent aping Jordan’s movements and skills has paid off. He acknowledged you. You made it.

Of course, if the notoriously petty Jordan was going to mention anyone, it makes that he’d single out Kobe, and not just because he’d consider the mimicry flattering. Bryant really does work harder than everyone else, and he’s been good for long enough (with no signs of slowing down) that he may eventually top Jordan’s longevity. They’re similarly insane competitors.

The “Next Jordan” idea was always a silly one, but Bryant is certainly the player most like Jordan in all aspects of his game — even if he eventually becomes something less than the greatest player of the post-MJ era, which I’m sure many of you will argue in the comments. That’s an accomplishment in itself. Even coming close to the top means something.

Jordan was a little too old to deal with Kobe at this point in his career but he definitely did give it the old college try.

Mediaoutrage- Alright y’all weight in! We definitely agree with MJ’s assessment on the matter. Kobe will NEVER be Mike but he is the closest one we’ve seen come close to the hard work and determination equipped with skills and big-time moments and entertainment. We used and a few times but oh well.

The barbershop talk has been growing at a feverish pitch since Kobe Bryant entered into the league back in 1996 drawing comparisons to Michael Jordan with many hoping the Lower Merrion prospect could continue and build on the legacy left by the games greatest player. Kobe came into the game with plenty of flash, confidence and arrogance which helped him ascend to heights not witnessed since the days of Jordan when he dominated.

Kobe was definitely a clone of Jordan in almost every possible way. If he would have paid less attention to watching countless clips of Jordan and given Vanessa just a little bit of his off-court-attention, then maybe he wouldn’t be figuring out how to redistribute his wealth and properties to her now. We kid.

The athleticism was comparable to Mike’s and so was his flare for the dramatic with time running down. A young Kobe could do things with the basketball that not only drew oooo’s and ahhhhh’s but also championships. So just how does Kobe Bryant stack up to Michael Jordan???

We’ll break it down for you…

1. Defense- Without a doubt Michael Jordan is a far better one-on-one defender than Kobe Bryant is or ever was. Jordan led the league in steals multiple times and also won a defensive player of the year award – something not often accomplished by guards.

2. Scoring- Kobe is a great scorer and can light you up with the quickness and ease BUT this category also goes to Jordan because his career average is 30.5. Kobe learned how to take over a game on the offensive end by studying Jordan tapes. This category is a close one though because both players are prolific and legendary when it comes to knocking down a basket.

3. Rebounding- Once again this category belongs to Michael Jordan. Sorry Kobe.

4. Free Throw Shooting- Jordan is also a higher percentage free throw shooter throughout his career. SMH. We know you Kobe stans already have the revolver loaded… but before you pull that trigger finish reading – your boy might have a chance…

5. Clutch Player- Who is better with time running down at the end of a game and when it really counts??? We would have to say this is another close one! But if we had to bet the house, we’re going with Michael Jordan because he’s done it MORE times than Kobe Bryant has. Jordan did it in on the highest stage when the Bulls beat Karl Malone and John Stockton’s Utah Jazz in the Finals back in ’98 to win his 6th and final NBA championship…. don’t act like you don’t remember!  There’s a picture below just to remind you

6. Championship Rings- Well anyone with a little basketball knowledge will know that Michael Jordan has 6 rings and Kobe currently holds 5. BUT what is even more significant about these numbers are the way in which the rings were obtained. Follow us…. Michael Jordan was the captain of his ship and Chicago Bulls – so every ring he won, he put the team on his back to do so. Kobe Bryant won his first 3 rings from 2000-2002 with SHAQUILLE O’NEAL being Batman and him being… well…. ROBIN. Can’t take anything away from Kobe though because he was just as big a reason for the June celebrations BUT if you remove SHAQ from that team it’s highly unlikely he would have but 2 rings, which he later accomplished with Pau Gasol and the gang. So Jordan definitely wins this category again…

7. MVP’s- Without a doubt this belongs to MJ. Jordan won 5 season MVP’s during his career and 6 Playoff MVP’s. Kobe has 1 Season MVP and 2 Playoff MVP’s. Sorry Kobe you still come up SHORT.

8. Stamp on the game- Okay, we know you’re wondering what kind of category is this??? Well we’re going to explain to you why it’s relevant to this convo. Which player has had more of an impact on the overall game of basketball? JORDAN!

9. Conclusion- Have you not been reading 1-8 mufuggas!?!?! Conclusion is that Kobe Bryant is a great player and probably the greatest we’ve had the opportunity to witness since Michael Jordan retired for the 3rd time BUT he is no where near MJ’s untouchable LEGACY! There will never be another MICHAEL JORDAN. Some of you are saying “well there will never be another KOBE BRYANT either!”, and you are oh-so-right! BUT Michael Jordan is definitely BETTER and Kobe Bryant knows this and that’s why he patterned his entire LIFE and GAME after #23. Mike Brown shared his opinions on the differences between the two superstars he’s had the opportunity of coaching in LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

Here’s what he had to say regarding both players

“LeBron [James] is a guy who is still learning and still growing, and the reality of it is that being down there with Dwyane Wade has helped him,” Brown said. “They’re different personalities. LeBron, he’s a guy who likes to laugh and joke. He knows obviously there’s a time to be serious, but he’s youthful.

“Kobe is not as much. Kobe’s more serious-minded and so on and so forth. But Kobe knows how to have fun in his own way, too.”

For those hoping his age would diminish his potent skills Kobe Bryant is proving otherwise as he continues on a tear. Kobe dropped 40 last night in LA as the Lakers discarded the Cavs which made it his 3rd consecutive game scoring 40 or more points.

Entering their marquee matchup with the Clippers on Saturday (10:30 p.m. ET, NBA TV), the Lakers have won five straight games to climb to second place in the Western Conference.

The headlines will tell you that Kobe Bryant has scored 40-plus points in each of the last three, and the speculation will tell you that he’s trying to prove to Dwight Howard that he’s still got it. But the numbers tell you that the Lakers are winning games on the other end of the floor.

Through Friday, the Lakers rank just 14th in offensive efficiency, scoring 100.3 points per 100 possessions, barely above the league average of 99.9. And during this five-game winning streak, with Bryant averaging 39 points and shooting 50 percent, they’ve actually scored less than 99 points per 100 possessions. Translation: Their offense, even with Kobe going off, has been pretty mediocre.

On the other end of the floor, the Lakers rank fourth in the league, allowing their opponents to score just 94.8 points per 100 possessions. And over the last five games, the Laker D has been downright stifling, allowing less than 90 points per 100 possessions.

Of course, only one of the Lakers’ last five opponents (Phoenix) has been an above-average offensive team thus far. But the Lakers have held the five to an average of nine points per 100 possessions below their season mark.

It was thought that the Lakers’ defense might suffer with the departure of Lamar Odom, who had the lowest on-court defensive efficiency number of any Laker rotation player over the last three seasons. (From 2009-10 through last season, the Lakers allowed just 99.8 points per 100 possessions in Odom’s 7,539 minutes.)

But new head coach Mike Brown has seemingly made up for Odom’s absence. In fact, the Lakers were a top-five defense already when Andrew Bynum (their second-most important defender over the last few years) returned from his four-game suspension.

The Lakers’ defense is strong in almost every statistical category. It ranks fourth in defending 2-point shots, sixth in defending 3-point shots, third in defensive rebounding percentage, and ninth in opponent free throw rate.

The only thing the Lakers don’t do well defensively is force turnovers. In fact, they rank 29th by forcing only 13.1 turnovers per 100 possessions.

Ironically, the Clippers’ offense ranks second by committing only 13.8 turnovers per 100 possessions. Overall, though it’s been pretty inconsistent through eight games, Chris Paul‘s new team ranks sixth offensively, scoring 104.2 points per 100 possessions.

So Saturday’s matchup will be offense vs. defense. And no matter how many points that Bryant scores, it will likely be the Lakers’ defense that puts them in position to win the game.
