Lebron James filed the necessary paperwok to change his jersey number for next year in honor of Michael Jordan.  Bron said he felt that Jordan’s #23 should be retired from being worn by players in the NBA due to all of the things Jordan accomplished and did for the game.  Well peep what number bron will be rockin’ next season and for the remainder of his career…

After first floating the idea in November, LeBron James will be following through on his plan to honor the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan, by changing his uniform number from 23 to 6. The paperwork for the change was filed Monday, just in time to beat the Wednesday deadline.

“I’ve done it,” LeBron told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “I already sent it in. I’m going to be No. 6.” Now, the league just has to approve the switch, which it will because LeBron’s new jersey is sure to be a best-seller, just like when Kobe Bryant switched from 8 to 24 or Andray Blatche from 32 to 7. OK, that last one might not have had jerseys flying off shelves.

While LeBron’s tribute is pretty cool, it also seems a little off to me. I’m not going to dispute the greatness of Michael Jordan, but there have been some pretty legendary number 6’s in NBA history. Guys you may have heard of like Bill Russell and Julius Erving. And also Bonzi Wells, but that’s a different story.

Furthermore, LeBron’s new number means he’ll need a new symbol from Nike, as his current “Crown” design prominently features the number 23. Perhaps, in another ode to Jordan, James will make his “Dunkman” character his primary logo. Up to this point, “Dunkman” has been featured on his shoes, but usually in out of the way places such as the soles. It’ll be interesting to see what happens as LeBron’s current logo has appeared on all his clothes, shoes, and even Ohio State’s uniforms.

This should also be an encouraging sign to fans of the Cavaliers. Were he planning on leaving, there would be no need to petition the league to wear a new number as he’d be wearing an entirely new jersey anyways. LeBron asking for a number change is a way of saying he’s at least considering staying in Cleveland. However, we should also mention that 23 is retired in Miami. Start theorizing about conspiracies.

Considering it’s just a guy switching numbers, there’s a lot to think about here. So much, in fact, that I can’t find a way to fit in a Cedric Ceballos joke. Wait, that just did it.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired Antawn Jamison on Wednesday night, the forward they hope will fit in between LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal on a championship front line.

Jamison goes to Cleveland from the Washington Wizards in a three-team trade that sent Drew Gooden to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Washington received Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, a 2010 first-round draft pick and the rights to Emir Preldzic, who was selected in the second round of last year’s draft from Cleveland.

The Wizards also received forward Al Thornton from Los Angeles.

Cleveland gets guard Sebastian Telfair from the Clippers.

“Antawn is a great pro. We are very excited to have an experienced all-star player of Antawn’s caliber and character join us,” Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry said in a statement announcing the trade. “He has the ability to add a special, unique dimension to our team with a strong inside presence and the ability to stretch teams defensively, while impacting the entire court. We think he matches the culture we have built, and continue to build, and will fit well with our group on the court and off.”

The Cavaliers had long coveted an athletic power forward who could play on the perimeter after they were eliminated by the Orlando Magic in last year’s Eastern Conference finals.

They had reportedly been involved in trade talks with Phoenix for Amare Stoudemire, but instead ended up with another former All-Star.

Jamison, who had been with the Wizards since 2004, is averaging 20.5 points this season. He was not in uniform for Washington’s game with Minnesota on Wednesday.

“Antawn Jamison has been the embodiment of leadership on and off the court for this franchise for five-and-a-half seasons and we thank him for all he has done for the Wizards and the city of Washington,” Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said. “Unfortunately, our on-court results have not met our expectations and we felt it was necessary to make changes to improve our future and our financial flexibility. This trade accomplished both of those objectives.”

Jamison left the arena shortly before the game. As he entered his car, he said to reporters: “Not now.”

He did have a message for Wizards fans. “You know I love them more than they love me.”

Jamison should immediately step in at power forward for Cleveland and supply James with another legitimate scoring option as the Cavaliers’ seek their first championship. Jamison is still owed $28 million over the next two seasons.

Cleveland (43-11) already has the best record in the NBA and can set a new franchise mark by winning its 14th straight game Thursday night against Denver. Still, the Cavaliers couldn’t pass on the opportunity to add a proven veteran like Jamison, who can stretch opposing defenses with his perimeter shooting and open up the lane for James and O’Neal.

Ilgauskas, who is 34, has played his entire 12-year NBA career with the Cavaliers. He was supplanted as the starter center by O’Neal this season. He’s averaging 7.5 points and 5.3 rebounds this season. His career averages are 13.9 points and 7.7 rebounds.

“Z has been a cornerstone part of this franchise and his jersey will hang in the rafters here some day, not only because of his play, but because of the tremendous person he is and what he has meant to the franchise and the community,” Ferry said. “He has represented the Cavaliers, Cleveland and the NBA at a consistently high level for many years. We wish Z and his family the best.”

Ilgauskas’ agent, Herb Rudoy, told the (Cleveland) Plain Dealer that he would work quickly to get a buyout from Washington. That would free up Ilgauskas to sign with another team — including re-signing with the Cavaliers, although he’d have to wait 30 days to return to Cleveland.

“I’ve already heard from a few teams — good teams — that are really interested in wanting to talk about Z going to play for them,” Rudoy told the paper.

James can become a free agent this summer, leaving this as Cleveland’s final shot at a championship before he decides to stay or go. The Cavaliers also had the league’s best record last season, when they failed to reach the NBA finals.

Maybe Jamison can help them take that next step.

Rumors are swirling as the trade deadline inches closer, that the Phoenix Suns are in talks with the Caveliers to send Amare Stoudemire to Cleveland before the deadline approahces…

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns are closing in on a deal that would send All-Star forward Amare Stoudemire to Cleveland, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations.

Cavaliers would send Zydrunas Ilgauskas and J.J. Hickson to Phoenix in exchange for Stoudemire, one of the league’s most dominant big men.

While Cleveland remains in talks with several other teams, the club, from management down to the players, has settled on Stoudemire as its first choice.

The ball is in Phoenix’s court. The Suns are mulling whether the financial relief provided by Ilgauskas’ $12 million contract and the young and talented Hickson are enough for them to part with Stoudemire.

Cleveland believes the addition of Stoudemire would all but seal LeBron James’ re-signing with the team when he becomes a free agent this summer. The Cavaliers are also prepared to sign Stoudemire, who has one year and $17 million remaining on his contract, to a long-term contract extension once the season ends.

The Suns would likely waive Ilgauskas, a move that would allow him to be re-signed by Cleveland after 30 days.

Cleveland is also talking with Washington about acquiring Antawn Jamison, as well as Indiana about Troy Murphy. Meanwhile, Golden State is trying to entice the Cavs into taking Corey Maggette for Ilgauskas.

Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James has been fined $25,000 for kicking a water bottle during last night’s game vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations.

The incident occurred with 12.4 seconds remaining in the first quarter of Cleveland’s 109-95 victory over the Timberwolves at Quicken Loans Arena.

Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers put the smack down on D Wade’s Miami Heat in Miami last night during a very entertaining game which saw both stars shine very bright while putting on shows.  Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Penny Hardaway and other greats were in the building watching the two young players spar.  Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls Jersey was hung from the rafters in Miami which is interesting since he played for the Bulls.  People everywhere acknowledge Jordan as the greatest player to ever play the game.  Lebron had something to say about that after the game:

“In honor of Michael Jordan, I will no longer wear number 23 as of next year.  He’s the greatest and I think his number should be retired throughout the NBA.  I will probably wear my lucky number which is 6.”

Braylon Edwards is now the subject of an NFL probe as to whether or not he attacked a club promoter that is friends with Lebron James.

*The NFL has launched an investigation into whether Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards violated the league’s conduct policy for allegedly punching the friend of his sports rival LeBron James outside a nightclub early Monday.      

       “We are looking into it,” league spokesman Greg Aiello told the Associated Press Tuesday. “It is premature to speculate about potential discipline.”

       Edwards is accused of assaulting club promoter Edward Givens early Monday morning following an argument in downtown Cleveland. Although Edwards has not been charged with a crime, the league’s conduct policy states that discipline may be imposed for “the use or threat of violence.”      

       Edwards could also be disciplined by first-year Browns coach Eric Mangini, who earlier this season fined a player $1,700 for not paying for a $3 bottle of water during a hotel stay.      

       ”Personal conduct is very important to me,” Mangini said Monday. “It’s important for us and to the players. It’s important today, it’s important tomorrow.”       

       According to reports, the incident took place hours after the Browns fell to 0-4 with a 23-20 overtime loss to Cincinnati. Edwards had gotten into a skirmish with Bengals defensive lineman Pat Sims in the third and quarter and finished the game without a reception – a first in his pro career.      

       Hours later, Edwards was at View Ultralounge & Nightclub owned by LeBron’s friend Givens. At about 2:30 a.m., Givens said he got into an argument with the Cleveland Browns star.      

       “Braylon comes up and started saying things, degrading me,” Givens said. “He said if it wasn’t for LeBron [James] or the Four Horsemen [James' friends and business partners], I wouldn’t have what I have, nor would I be able to get girls. Everyone knows Braylon has a problem with LeBron.      

       “I had to speak up for myself. The conversation started to escalate. As some of his teammates started to pull him back, he punched me. As long as I’ve known Braylon, I’ve allowed him and his friends to come into our events free of charge. Whatever jealousy he has with LeBron, he felt he needed to take it out on me.”      

       Asked about the incident Tuesday, James told reporters, “I’ve never crossed paths with Braylon before, but it seems like there’s a little jealousy going on with Braylon and me and my friends. I have no idea why. I’ve never said anything to Braylon at all. But for him to do that is very childish. My friend is 130 pounds. Seriously. It’s like hitting one of my kids. It doesn’t make sense.”

       Edwards has been involved in other off-field incidents, a factor commissioner Roger Goodell considers when handing out any discipline. In March, Edwards was partying with suspended wide receiver Donte Stallworth in Miami the night Stallworth later drove drunk and killed a pedestrian. Last November, Edwards was fined $150 and given 30 hours of community service after he was found guilty of driving 120 mph.
