A New Orleans native with a troubled childhood, Perry, 39, credited all of his guests with inspiring his life. Of Winfrey, who attended the celebration with longtime beau Stedman Graham and best friend Gayle King, Perry said, “She owns her life. I am learning that. I never would have shown this to people a few years ago. I was embarrassed by the success.”

The evening:

As a large cast of attendants passed around champagne and tissues for the teary-eyed (who were many), Perry shared his rags-to-riches story over a large video screen that eventually gave way to a live singer and band delivering “The Impossible Dream,” followed by a fireworks display. Mary J. Blige, Patti Labelle and Gladys Knight also treated guests to separate performances.

At one point, Perry unveiled a special surprise for veteran trailblazers Poitier, Dee and Tyson: each now has a soundstage named after him and her.

“Is this my wall?” joked Poitier – as Winfrey dissolved into tears.

Mediaoutrage- Such a proud night for Tyler and his fans. Tyler has accomplished so much in so little time. He went from producing plays on the chitlin’ circuit to producing movies on the big screen. We’re definitely awaiting to see what Mr. Perry has in store for us in the future. Congrats Tyler!

A very happy Russell Simmons and Porschla Coleman attended the 9th Annual Art For Life Benefit Gala Saturday in East Hampton, NY despite the reports of a recent mutual split. New Era & Belvedere honored Nelly on Sunday in West Hollywood and a few celebs came out to support. Actress Jill Marie Jones (Girlfriends), Jermaine Dupri, Tisha Campbell who will never switch from that fire engine red lipstick, and Tracey Edmonds all attended and showed Nelly some love. Tracey Edmonds and her new man Rocco DiSpirito attended an after party at the Bowery Hotel in NY on Monday night. They look like a happy couple, although he is a well known and respected chef, so his pockets are probably pretty chunky so the relationship might last longer than the NBA Playoffs.

Tracey Edmonds has officially moved on from her relationship with Eddie Murphy and started dating chef Rocco Dispirito. Tracey doesn’t believe in staying single.

This thing is like a bad soap opera you just got to tune in. Monday morning Tracey Edmonds called radio personality Doug Banks to address his recent telephone interview with Johnny Gill, in which he confronted the rumors of a relationship with Eddie Murphy and the disaster wedding that went down on the island with Tracey and Eddie.

Gill denied that he was ever in a homo relationship with Eddie Murphy. Doug Banks told listeners that Tracey had phoned in but was under gag order and couldn’t discuss the issue because of a confidentiality agreement she signed with Eddie at the end of their relationship. (Now that’s deep when you signing gag orders at the end of a relationship, powerful media companies like Harpo usually make employees sign those so you just can’t go and put the secret stuff out in the media, so wow)

However Tracey’s publicist released an official statement regarding Johnny Gill’s comments during the Friday’s interview.

“I was very shocked and disappointed to hear of Johnny Gill’s false spin on the chain of events surrounding our wedding. His outrageous lies were clearly a very desperate and pathetic attempt to clean up his reputation at my expense. I would appreciate it if Mr. Gill would refrain from continuing to spread false gossip and lies to the public, and allow everyone involved to move on with their lives. We all know the real truth.”

Mediaoutrage- That ‘We all know the truth’ line sounds a little suspect as if she is trying to use some sort of written sign language and say that there was some funny ish going on and that it had nothing to do with her allegedly calling Eddie Murphy’s mom a ‘rat b*tch’. SMH if she really said that and then escaped with her lips still on her face.
